Many years ago I was told that when Saint Cuthberts Church was being built, Andrew Leslie, owner of Leslies Shipyard.
Said that whatever church was built first, he would help to cover the cost of a Clock Tower.
As it was Saint Andrews Church, was being built around the same time. The magificent building can be viewed, just down Ellison Street, and was the winner
of the prize.
And all who sail up the River Tyne can view the Clock Tower.
I have often, in the past, paid a visit to Hebburn Community Centre and did not realise there was such an elegant church building only a few street further over. I am beginning to think I walk around with my eyes shut most of the time. I will need to get some information on St. Andrews.
Sounds like you need to make a return visit to the area, and capture Saint Andrews Church for your site. As I mentioned Saint Andrews is only a two min walk down Ellison Street, and truly you will be amazed.
Another Church that would merit a visit is Saint Johns, Church, on Canning Street, just up from the traffic lights in the centre of Hebburn. ( this church is still used for members of the Parish)
Looking forward to your next set of photos, Meanwhile keep up the good work, your site is brilliant.
Wow! Brilliant photograph of Saint Andrews Church Hebburn overlooking the River Tyne and the breathtaking Durham Cathedral photo excellent, both on my favourite lists…..cheers Caitlin
